EXERCISE; ETHICAL BEHAVIOUR

  • You find some good images on the web that would look good on your site.  You copy and paste them to your blog.

It would be unethical to just copy and paste someone else’s work. I will seek permission for copyright from the publisher, to re-use that.
According to me, I will be inspired by the good images and get some idea out of it, as I would use my creativity, imagination to get a better and original outcome.

You are in a hurry to finish an assignment and you find the perfect explanation of a difficult concept on wikipedia. You decide to copy it into your work.
Personally, I will try to paraphrase the information which I received from the article and I will not just copy paste . Along with that , i will give proper citation and references as it would be more ethical and right way of doing it.

You are a medical researcher and you think you have discovered a new drug that cures lung cancer.  It worked well on mice although a few of them died of heart problems. You want to test it on people.  You recruit 100 lung cancer patients into your treatment programme. You don’t tell them about the new drug.  You treat 50 patients with usual drugs and 50 with the new drug to see which is better.
Without seeking permission from the higher authority, we are not allowed to do this experiment. Above all, even in the medical field and the hospital, permission must be obtained from the person concerned. It’s unethical if they don’t follow the rules or try to hide from people about the experiment or research to the patients. According to a study recently published in BMJ Quality & Safety , an online journal that provides information relating to healthcare quality, 43 million instances of medical negligence  occur worldwide every single year.

  • You are doing your PhD about drug abuse among students.  You interview 30 students about their drug use. You discover that one of the students is actually a fairly big time dealer and you report him to the police.
Indeed it is one of the risky issues for the respective pupil. Just with the help of interview its impossible to figure out the student dealings.
I will inform to the school counselor and his parents before involving the police. Because involving police may destroy his career as it is unethical. However they have to take necessary action against to protect the student from the disaster that’s quite ethical.
  • You are a researcher looking at the effect of violent computer games on children.  You recruit 20 children into your study. Over a month you regularly show them images of violence to see if it has an adverse effect on their behaviour.  One of the children becomes quite distressed each time and so you stop showing her images and drop her from the study.

It’s ethical to do these tests with the permission of parents and children and as long as the child is comfortable and not getting affected by the research.
If something goes wrong with the child due to this, I have to drop the respective student and continue the research with the rest of the students.
I feel that children should not be involved with these outbreaks of violence which may affect their mindset.

  • You want to research how easy it is to hack into your organisation’s computer system by persuading people to divulge login and password details.  You recruit a small team to ring up key people in the organisation and persuade them to give either their own or their boss’s details.

I will seek permission from the organization for the research because it might end up as breaching the privacy. However it is easy to hack the system with the help of hacking team but its unethical.
Selected team has to be trustworthy and they should sign a confidentiality contract that they will keep every information ,data as confidential and safe .
In future if the information is leaked out then they will be prosecuted.

You are doing an initial research in area of a town where may bars and pubs are located, to estimate the level of problematic social behaviour in the area. your research is independent from the police, because you want to observe their behaviour as well. You observe both abusive and violent behaviour.

At some level, it’s really necessary to deal with other things without their knowledge, so that it doesn’t seem to influence many people.
It is followed in many cases by government officials as undercover investigative officers.
Once social issues emerge, the police should take the necessary steps to stop all such accidents. It’s legal to notice aggressive things because it helps a lot of others to be on a safer side.

Broad Research/ Project Interest Area.

  • Short description of the area of IT that interests you (explain it to me!)
    Big Data in social media.
Nowadays, social media plays a pivotal role in this modern technology.
I would like to figure out the data aggregation methods , latency and resolution for that as well, in social media.
  • Why is it interesting to you
Because, Big data is one of the live one and getting developed each and every day. Every day there are millions of data being produced in social media. I am really fond of social media and their techniques and various methodology being used in it. Many social media platforms are being using this social media, so I am interested in it.
  • Three things you know about it
Big data is being used in social media. In order to get efficient (data aggregation) database management systems should have very important assets for management of a large corpus of data and especially for effective and efficient retrieval of particular information from a large collection whenever needed. As of now Hadoop data aggregation methodology is being used in it .
  • Three things you believe about it
Big data is getting bigger everyday and people are posting lot of data’s everyday in social media.
In the upcoming days researchers will find an alternative ways to get the aggregate the data in social media platform (data aggregation) as fast as possible in Big data.
  • Three things you don’t know about it
How the social platforms are so user friendly and easy to access all times. Social media platforms is being so faster in all the aspects and able to manage loads of data.

  • Would you rather: Do something, Research it or Do both
I would like to do research about big data and come up with a solution .
I need to do a research about big data and add some new technology, which should be helpful for the social media to aggregate data as faster as possible.
I want to compare all the possible systems and technology in big data which may helps to various platforms for the data retrieving.
  • Go and see if you can find a few resources about it – (post URL) forum? facebook group? linkedin group? or a good blog? Or even academic articles 🙂

Area of research interest peer review

In general, everyone is trying their best to present their blogs by doing a lot of research as per the requirement of the topic. But I’m going to look and share about the Sinhara silva’s project plans.

Vendor-based network switches for RFC : He is planning to develop a Vendor-based network switch for RFC, that is useful for networking issues and also it will help to resolve the latencies of vendor based network switches in an organization based on creating RFC cable.

I understand that his idea is all about creating Vendor-based network switches. Only based on his own experience Singara is willing to do a project in this field and has got great knowledge in such afield as well.

Area of interest

The IT area/subject I have most enjoyed is ….

I have enjoyed studying design and development concept(web design) and Database.

The IT area/subject I least enjoyed is…..

I am not interested in software development .

The IT area/subject I was most interested in is……

Big Data(database) is the one, I’m so interested.

The one IT thing I never want to have to do again is…………..

Software Development, would be one which I really don’t want to anymore.

I chose to study IT because I  …….

Because, it is very interesting for me and it could be the best field in the future.

If I couldn’t study IT I would study………..

I will start my own business, Diary farm , poultry .

When I was a kid I wanted to be………………..

I wanted to be a doctor, but that never happened.

One IT thing I would like to know more about is   ……..

I would like to learn about AWS and help desk support , because it has lot of opportunities in New-Zealand.

Academic paper Reading Exercise

  1. Did the abstract tell you the three things I said it should? If not, what did it tell you? (NB If your paper doesn’t have an abstract, it is not an academic research paper!!! Go and find another one!)

It’s an analysis about Big data analytics and precision Animal Agriculture in machine learning and data mining.
They are trying to address the problem in animal agriculture in Livestock Enterprise(which is based one big data analytics, machine learning and data mining).

To address such a knowledge gap in this case and resolve such issue , they come up with an article outlines a framework for machine learning and data mining which offers a glimpse into how they can be used and applied to solve pressing problems in animal sciences.

  2. What seems to be the research question(s) they were trying to answer ?
It’s clearly evident that they are tying to resolve the problems in precision agriculture based on big data and data mining. Also, they got a new framework for machine learning which can be applied to solve those problems in animal sciences.

  3. What  methods) did they use to answer the question(s)
With the help of data-intensive technologies, we can monitor animals continuously during production and this information can be used to improve health, welfare, performance and environmental load.
Also, they used Predictive big data analysis methods to improve the animal agriculture.
The emerging field of Machine learning and data mining are anticipated to an instrumental in helping meet the unsettled challenges faced by this animal agriculture.

Overview of big data analysis in animal science using machine learning and data mining tools.

  1. How credible do you think the paper is? (hint: look at who authors are and where and when it is published also compare what they were asking with what they did)
I predict that this article more useful for the animal agriculture around the globe. Because, they have addressed the issues and discovered a framework for machine learning and data mining which helps to overcome this pressing problems in animal sciences.
  2. Did you agree, or not, with what they wrote in their conclusion? Why?
Yes,I agree with this them. Because as far as I understood and the advancement they have initiated for this problem is really useful. However, they have to implement these steps in order to demonstrate.
  3. Briefly describe two things that you learnt from the paper.
I have learned about the value of Data mining and machine learning tools for analyzing big data in animal sciences.

With the help of data mining techniques can advance the implementation of precision animal agriculture to extract critical information and predict observation from big data as well.
  4. In no more than 250 of your own words (i.e. a paraphrase), describe what the paper is about – you could start with “This paper describes……….

In this article, the author describes about the problems faced in Animal Agriculture and in livestock enterprise. Considerable efforts have enabled for this animal science to embark on information technology to improve animal agriculture. Also, the increasing amount of data generated by these animal agriculture systems are expected to be resolved with the implementation of Data-intensive technologies.

They are depicting about animal science community today often lacks the infrastructure and tools to make full use of these new types of data.
It’s expected that predictive big data analysis will be inclining common across all science disciplines. In this paper the first step along with path involve grasping the advantages and pitfalls of these tools when applied to animal science specific domains are explained clearly.

In summary the emerging fields of machine learning and data mining are expected to be instrumental in helping meet the daunting challenges facing global agriculture. Yet, their impact and potential in big data analysis have not been adequately appreciated in the animal science community where this recognition has remained only fragmentary. To address such knowledge gaps, this article outlines a framework for machine learning data mining and offers a glimpse into how they can be applied to solve pressing problems in animal sciences.

Blog posting About Last week Presentation.

When I started working for my presentation it was quite learning experience for me. I learned a lot about presentation by doing thisMyself and team mate Mahesh spent a lot of time to prepare presentation, and it was very brief as well. There are a lot of things to learn about this presentation, As a need to learn more and polish our presentation skills. Overall it was a great learning experience for me, made me to rectify the mistakes and learn as well.

When it comes to Presentation I found that the content is very important in this case I felt Shivangi Josvir and Arjun, zheningin and Destinnie, Singara teams were representing their team and also their content and presentation was impressive. Of course, every one have done their best and it was a good learning process for me as I understood personally.

RES 702 COMPUTATIONAL THINKING, VIRTUALISATION TECHNOLOGY.

  1. Computational Thinking
Computational Thinking (CT) is a problem solving process that includes a number of characteristics and dispositions

 four parts of computational thinking:

  • Decomposition-  breaking down a complex problem or system. into smaller, more manageable parts
  • Pattern recognition.-  looking for similarities among and within problems
  • abstraction- focusing on the important information only, ignoring irrelevant detail
  • Algorithm design- developing a step-by-step solution to the problem, or the rules to follow to solve the problem .

is the process of running one operating system inside another.  For example, you can have a perfectly normal Windows Vista operating system installed, and install Windows XP inside that operating system so that it runs in a window. The Windows Vista OS (Operating System) isn’t affected, you don’t need to reboot to switch between them, and you get all sorts of extra features for the virtual Windows, such as the ability to pause it to preserve its virtual RAM contents exactly as you left it.

    Benefits of VIRTUALISATION Technology:

    Reduced capital and operating costs.
    Minimized or eliminated downtime.
Increased IT productivity, efficiency, agility and responsiveness.
Faster provisioning of applications and resources.

Research Paradigm

Definition: A research paradigm is an approach about the long term research model which has been clearly verified by the respective research community and that has been in practice for hundreds of years.

Research paradigm.

research pradigm

Most of the research paradigm emerge from any one of the two paradigms which are positivist  approach and Interpritivist approach . Every research uses one of the research paradigm as a guideline to develop research methodology in their research in-order to get a most valid and appropriate output. Though basically there are two paradigms but there are several other paradigms emerged from these two especially in one particular research (social science).

In the recent years there has been a prominent paradigms which is mixed-method research. Quantitative research methodology is clearly the most favored approach for the research. In choosing the best methodology for social sciences, there has been a long debate for over half a decade and thus resulted in the emergence of mixed-method paradigm and mixed method methodology.

Types of Research Paradigm:

  1. Positivist  paradigm
Positivism is one of the most common conceptual framework for research or quantitative research. Empirical hypothesis testing is being believed by quantitative research as they follow positivist approach. In quantitative research the research follow the probabilistic model that is determined by the previous research. Posititvist believe that the findings of one study can be generalized to another study of a similar kind regardless of its conducted in a different situations and environment as well.  This is true of scientific variables like volume, speed, density, strength, and weight.  However for human behavior cannot be studied in lab settings it’s difficult to generalize human behavior to a wide and varied group of people regardless of if they have several similarities.

  2. Interpretivist paradigm
Interpretivist approach are being used for the the qualitative research in social sciences. There is no pre-defined or determined probabilities for human behavior in this Interpritivist approach. A human behavior is quite easy to control and also its affected by the various factors which is there nature as well. Hence interpretivist is believe in studying human behavior in the daily life is important rather than very well controlled environment.

Distinction between Positivism and Interpretivism

  • To summarize positivism and interpretivism we can say that positivism is governed by objectivity, measurability, predictability, probability, controllability and control laws that can predict human behavior.
On the other hand, anti-positivism or interpretivism is governed by subjectivity and studying human behavior in a real-life setting.
  • Though, both of these paradigms are opposite of each other they represent the reality in two different manners, both of them have their own value and significance in the growth and development of knowledge.

August 06 Blog 2. RES 702

  1. What is ontology? How is it relevant to research?
Ontology is one of the most complex terms, and which has been derived from the Greek Language. Ontology term which explains the about the nature of being or becoming existence and their differences and similarities.
Ontology helps us to understand questions like about the what is god, what is a disease, what happens after death, what is artificial intelligence etc. The ontology in research field is completely dedicated towards understanding whether things exist or don’t exist. People who are doing research about ontology is trying to analyze the occurrence of particular thing and what is the reason behind it.

  1. What is epistemology? How is it relevant to research?
Epistemology is one of the key division of Philosophy which always deals with the main aspects of acquiring knowledge. Meaning of knowledge is being analyzed and discovered by Philosophy.
Epistemology Encompasses about various types of knowledges like empirical knowledge, Propositional knowledge and collective knowledge.
  2. What is the connection between ontology and epistemology in a research context?
Difference between the ontology and Epistemology
Image result for ontology definition in research

  1. Above all the ontology tries to find out what is there in the universe and epistemology finds out ways to know what exist in the universe. So, both Ontology and Epistemology clearly helps us to find about the existence, evidences, Facts, and justified things along with sound reasons.

30 July Week 1 Blog posting for Res701.

  • What do you think ‘research is?
Research is one of the best way to find out the particular concern of a problem using one particular scientific methods. According to The American sociologist Earl Robert Babbie, “Research is one of the best way to describe inquire, depicts and prove the observed phenomenon.
Research involves two methods and they are inductive and deductive methods. Inductive research methods are used to analyze the observed phenomenon whereas the deductive methods are used to verify the observed phenomenon. More commonly deductive methods are associated with qualitative research and inductive methods as well.
Research methods is defined as the tools or an instrument that is used to accomplish the goals and attributes of a conducting a research process. Research is a careful study of a specific problem or concern using scientific methods, tools, and instruments as well.

  • Do you think you will ever need research skills?
Research is a useful way to find out a proper data and details about the respective task. Research is completely based on logical reasoning and also involves both inductive and deductive methods. In research there will be always an in-depth analysis of all the data collected from research so that the results are so accurate. Research skills are always important because the information is being obtained from the proper sources and true to its nature as well.
  • What do you think a research journal is and who is it written for?
There are two types of research journals. First is an academic publication of Peer reviewed articles in a respective field , which presents research as a clear and distinct process.
The second type of research journal is one of the ordinary way of research and it helps the messy business to find out a proper resolution for the problems. According to Bryman(2004), the journal should be a record of the methods the researcher used, and it shows the methods which are being used to find one or more research methods to figure out and solve the issues in the company.

  • What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is an offence which means using someone else’s text without their permission or copyrights, whether it’s intentional or Unintentional. Plagiarism always leads to a serious problem and consequences for the students. In detail, according to the U.S.Law the expression of original idea is considered intellectual property and protected by copyright laws, Just like Original inventions.
    Accidental Plagiarism
Student doesn’t know to give citation and bibliography clearly will be considered as accidental plagiarism.
  • Deliberate plagiarism
Copying, pasting the writings from the web pages or online sources are called deliberate plagiarism.

  • Why is it important to avoid it?
Avoiding plagiarism is very important because when a student composing something on their own, which may help them to develop their skills and critical thinking as well. In order to demonstrate and prove yourself as a qualified candidate, students has to avoid plagiarism distinctly.
